Bocas del Toro attractions

Bocas del Toro attractions

Bocas del Toro main attractions are beaches and islands. There also the oldest National park of the country.

Here you can find a list of them.

Colon Island

Bluff beach

It's a golden 5 km sand beach with intense waves where swimming is at your own risk. As alternative you can relax by the pool or on the beach chairs of some installations. To reach the beach you can rent bicycle or hire a 4x4 taxi through a dirty road of about 10 km. The ride should cost 18-25 USD each way. On the way you'll find first Playa El Istmito, close to the town and then Playa Punch, good for surfing.

Strong currents, be careful!

Playa Estrella, Boca del drago ( Starfish beach)

It's famous for the huge number of starfish visible in the clear and calm waters of this beach of Colon Island. It's easily reachable with a local bus that leave from the central park Bolivar of Bocas Town every hour (5 USD round trip).

Carenero island

5 minute by taxi boat (1 USD) from Bocas Town is a nice close alternative to Isla Colon. Small beaches, snorkelling and surfing spots and the chance to rent kayaks.

Bastimentos Island

Old Bank is a small village, the main settlement of the island, with coloured wooden houses. It is worth a visit to feel the original Caribbean vibe. Take a taxi boat from Bocas Town to visit the village. From there you can reach the beaches: after 30 minutes walk in the jungle you'll find Wizard Beach. In case of recent rains the hike could be very strenuous and long, then better going directly to the beaches. Not recommendable to go alone.

Alternatively go directly to the beaches. Taxis boat take you to a public deck on the southern coast of the island: from there an easy trail leads to the beaches. The southern coast is covered by mangroves, instead the north side has 5 beaches faced on the Caribbean Sea. Red Frog Beach and the nearby Turtle Beach, North Beach and Playa Larga. They have great waves, perfect for surf lovers.

Island Bastimentos National Marine Park

The Bastimentos National Marine Park is the first established in Panama, in 1988. It includes part of Bastimento Island and Cayos Zapatillas. These are wonderful desert islands reachable with many day tours organised in Bocas Town or in many hotels.

There are no facilities to stay overnight, just day trip. One have a nice trail that crosses the island that lead to other beaches.

Really worth the visit. Don't miss it!
